The older DOC is the default extension of MS Word 2003 while DOCX is the default extension of Microsoft Word 2007 and above.Other notable differences between the two file formats include: ZIP and still open the document with any zip compression software. This means that you can replace the DOCX extension of the file with. The main difference between the two file formats is that in DOC, your document is saved in a binary file that includes all the related formatting and other relevant data while a DOCX file is actually a zip file with all the XML files associated with the document. Key Differences Between the Two MS Word File Formats The new language came with more benefits such as significantly smaller file sizes, better looking compressed images, and less chance of files getting corrupted. The new standards came under the name of Office Open XML and were based on the Extensible Markup Language instead of the older and limited binary-based format. ![]() The competition led Microsoft to develop an even broader open standard, which gave birth to the DOCX file format together with its counterparts such as PPTX for PowerPoint presentations and XLSX for spreadsheets. In the early 200s, Microsoft was already facing competition from Open Office, which is a free and open-source suite with its own word processing version known as Open Document Format (ODF). In 2008, Microsoft released an updated version of the DOC format that could be used in other programs with a few functional limitations. In the 1990s and early 200s, there were other competing products that could work with DOC files although most of Word’s formatting was not supported in other types of word processors. The file format was a proprietary document processor for Microsoft and was only supported by MS Word. Microsoft Word began using the DOC file format over 30 years ago after they released its first Word version for MS-DOS. So, what is the difference between the two file formats and which one should you use? The best thing about DOCX format is the fact that it allows you to access files saved in DOC format whenever you want to. The DOCX format was introduced with the launch of the MS Word 2007 and is still the file format up to now. The DOC file format was the only file format for Microsoft Office until the company launched its 2003 version of MS Word. However, that may change going forward as Microsoft 365 users receive automatic updates and Office 2019 stays the same.įor businesses, one of the most important factors in deciding between Microsoft 365 and Office 2019 may be what operating system your organization is currently running. For now, the desktop apps are essentially the same across the two services. If you’re using the desktop versions of Microsoft’s Office apps, there should be no notable difference in performance between Office 2019 and Microsoft 365. Microsoft 365 includes virtually every app Microsoft has developed, including newer ones like Microsoft Teams, Editor, and Money in Excel. Office 2019 only includes essentials like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, OneNote, and Skype. It’s also important to keep in mind that Office 2019 doesn’t include all of Microsoft’s office software.

More than 120 million people speak Japanese around the world. ![]() Japanese translators are in luck when it comes to English literacy in Japan. ![]() China, Korea, and Japan are competing to have students with the best English, with Japan lagging far behind in the third position. Although English classes are compulsory in Japanese schools, the ratio of students who have actual English abilities is unusually low. Do a lot of Japanese speak English?Įven though the Japanese education system is quite successful in many areas, it is not doing as well when it comes to English education. Still, it may be a good idea to consider how well a country’s population speaks English. After all, English-speaking countries are doing very well economically and they export many goods. Unless you speak a very rarely spoken language that has less than 100k speakers, finding an English translation job will be relatively easy. If your mother tongue is Japanese, you can’t go wrong with English. If you have concerns about job opportunities, I believe Japanese might be a good choice for you. If you are a native English speaker planning to learn a foreign language to become a translator or to add a new language to your translation arsenal, it is a good idea to check whether the countries which speak this foreign language are exporting many material or cultural goods. If you are a native English speaker who learned Japanese later, no matter how well you speak Japanese, you will most likely end up mainly translating from Japanese to English. In the translation industry, translators usually translate from their secondary languages (the languages they learn later in life) to their primary languages (mother tongue or the languages they use most often). The success of the Japanese manufacturing and media industries is particularly important for native English speakers who translate or would like to translate into Japanese. For more information about the Japanese economy and insights about the Japanese Translation Market, please visit our blog post here. in this regard, there are bound to be more job opportunities for Japanese to English translators compared to translators working from Turkish, Russian, Portuguese, and the like. While, as I have said, it is hard to beat the U.S. As we all probably know, Japan also exports a lot of media content such as anime, manga, games, and books. Japan manufactures a significant amount of electronics and consumer goods, which translates to (yes, pun intended) opportunities for Japanese technical translators. The situation is very different in Japan. As a result, no matter how popular Turkish TV shows are, media translators are mostly translating from English to Turkish. However, when it comes to cultural exports, it is difficult to be as successful as the United States. Truth to be told, thanks to the popularity of Turkish soap operas in Arabic-speaking countries and Latin America, Turkey is not doing so badly in the media sector. Another translation type that makes the bulk of translation work is media translation. When electronics or consumer goods are not manufactured in a country or when they are manufactured in limited numbers but rarely exported to other markets, there is little need to translate all these materials I have mentioned. These texts include user manuals, user interfaces, help articles, customer support instructions, educational materials, and many more. First of all, as Turkey’s manufacturing sector is not as large as, let’s say, Germany’s or Japan’s, texts related to this sector are not translated very frequently. There are multiple reasons for this phenomenon. Translations made from Turkish to other languages are minuscule in comparison. In Turkey, the translation market I work in, translations are usually done from other languages to Turkish. Then we can continue with English to Japanese translation. First, let’s discuss the job opportunities Japanese to English translators and translation agencies have. Whether you are translating from Japanese to English or from English to Japanese, the Japanese translation market has a lot to offer. Then we will explain how to utilize machine translation tools for translating to and from Japanese and lastly how to better use Google Translate when translating between English and Japanese. In this blog post, we will dive deeper into the Japanese translation market with job opportunities and average salaries for Japanese translators.
